Cheryl Newman, Picture Editor, Telegraph Magazine
Cheryl Newman is the photography director of the award winning Telegraph magazine. Since joining the Telegraph ten years ago she has raised the profile of the magazine within the industry commissioning intelligent, provocative and inventive photography. Her commitment to quality, contemporary photography has provided a much-needed platform for photographers worldwide. A fine art graduate Cheryl is keen to encourage young talent, and works closely with photographers on book and exhibition projects. Under her direction the magazine has won Newspaper Magazine of the Year at the British Magazine Editors awards twice in the last three years. She has been a judge on a number of photography competitions including the Taylor Wessing Portrait Prize at the National Portrait Gallery, London. Most recently Cheryl was in Kolkata teaching a workshop with another Getty Images grant-winning photographer Jonathan Torgovnik.
Jean-Francois Leroy, Director General, Visa pour l’Image
As a passionate photojournalist, Jean-Francois Leroy has been a reporter for Sipa Press and has collaborated with Photo-Reporter, Le Photographe, Photo-Revue and Photo magazine. In 1989, with Yann Arthus-Bertrand, he produced “3 days in France,” a photographic portrait of France 150 years after the invention of photography. Also in 1989, he founded Visa pour l’Image, the international photojournalism festival that takes place each summer in Perpignan, France. Leroy is currently Director General of the event. He has been a member of the World Press Photo jury and manages Société Images-Evidence with the Hachette Filipacchi Group.
Volker Lensch, Department Head, Stern Magazine
Volker Lensch has headed the photo department at Stern magazine since 1996. After graduating from high-school in Hamburg in 1981, he began freelancing as a photojournalist for local newspapers. In 1985 he became an assistant in the photo department of Bild newspaper, going on in 1986 to run the photo department for the Hamburg edition. By 1987, he was deputy photo editor for Bildwoche weekly magazine, returning to the national edition of Bild in 1988. He made the move to Stern in 1992 and became deputy photo editor in 1994, before assuming his current position.
